Tea export volumes grew by 20.27 per cent (3.76 million kilos) to 22.31 million kg, year on year (YoY) last month (February), Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said on Wednesday (20). Consequently tea export earnings, further backed by better prices, grew by 23.27 per cent (USD 24.26 million) to USD 128.52 million last month.
Meanwhile, tea export volumes in the first two months of the year grew by 13.76 per cent (4.97 million kg) to 41.08 million kg and tea export earnings grew by 13.36 per cent (USD 27.20 million) to USD 230.85 million, Forbes said.
“Iraq has been ranked at No. 1 among major importers of Ceylon Tea with a total of 5.30 M/Kgs, an increase of 14 per cent YoY in January-February 2024 against the previous year’s 4.66 M/Kgs. UAE (4.98 M/Kgs) and Russia (4.52 M/Kgs) emerged at 2nd and 3rd positions respectively, surpassing Türkiye recorded a decline of 38 per cent against the corresponding period of the previous year. Other notable importers are Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, Germany, Azerbaijan and Chile,” Forbes further said.
According to latest, comprehensive official data (2022), tea was Sri Lanka’s fourth largest foreign exchange earner in 2022, behind garments, remittances and IT and IT enabled services (ITES) exports, respectively, in that descending order.
